Hiatus Due To Grad School

The bad news: I have to go on hiatus, or at least a semi-hiatus (will still post book reviews).

The good news: It's because I'm in grad school, studying to be a librarian!

Thanks so much for following my blog/channel/instagram, and I hope you will continue to follow my book reviews.

Camp NaNoWriMo--July 2018

So I'm blogging about my Camp NaNoWriMo July experience... in September. Whoops.

So, for this Camp NaNoWriMo I set a goal for 50,000 words and wrote on a manual typewriter. :3 I estimated that each double-spaced typewritten page had between 200 and 250 words on it (I rounded down to 200), and with that I estimated how much I had written. I estimated that I wrote about 27,000 words over the course of that month, but I recently transcribed what I wrote onto the computer, and I actually wrote nearly 35,000 words! Yay!

I didn't reach my goal, sure, but I still wrote a lot. I also recorded a lot of it on my instagram, so... Here's my photo log!

Yes, this is the 1/! Key. Why they didn’t paint it on there I have no idea. XD

(I know the above doesn't seem to have much to do with Camp NaNoWriMo, but it popped up while I was writing on the deck, and I considered it a good omen!)

Geez I’m far behind... #campnanowrimo

My #campnanowrimo manuscript is getting too big for its Manila folder! #amwriting

The good news: I finished my Camp NaNoWriMo project. The bad news: it’s supposed to be a novel, but it’s only 27000-30000 words long (I wrote it on a typewriter so I have to estimate the word count). This isn’t a huge deal, as I’ve learned that my first drafts are very rushed and thin and get fattened up during the revision process. I’m concerned because this story is short even for me, but I’m hoping that after revisions it will be at least 50,000 words. Here’s hoping. Anyway, after I finished this I wrote a few hundred words into my next novel project, but then decided to put that aside. Even though hmmm Camp NaNoWriMo goal was 50,000, I’m going to stop here and devote my time to other goals I’ve wanted to accomplish by the end of July. I did what I really wanted to accomplish this month: finish a manuscript, even if it’s only about half the length I wanted. To those of you still writing, best of luck!!! #campnanowrimo #amwriting

End of Unannounced Hiatus

My sincere apologies for not announcing my hiatus. It was unplanned and every time I wanted to announce it, it seemed like it was too late. But I'm back now, hopefully with some new videos!

Frustration

TRIGGER WARNING for video and text: Discussion of OCD rules and rituals.

Recently, I realized that my system of keeping notebooks would not be possible without computers, and therefore would not be possible in a different time. For some reason, this frustrates me. I don't discuss it much in the video but this is reminiscent of an OCD rule I used to have, where all my hobbies had to be possible in a different time.

Back From Hiatus!

Hello world! It's been a long time, but I'm finally back from hiatus! And I made my first video in almost a year!

As I explained in the video, I needed a bit of a "mental health" vacation from the internet. But I really missed my blog, and I missed making videos, plus I have a bunch of new ideas!

So, what have I been doing these past months? I've discussed this in my video, but here's the rundown:

1. I've been editing one of my novels, and am now looking for a publisher.
2. I now keep my notebooks in binders, rather than in folders (but if you follow my blog you know that already).
3. I've started collecting hardback books.
4. I now own a kindle, and I love it.

So glad to be back!

Hiatus

Just a notice that The Spiderweb is going on a temporary hiatus. Thanks for reading!

Overdue Update

Hello, World! Happy New Year

Wow, it's been some time since my last post! I've been very busy trying to get my novel into shape and I haven't had much opportunity to think about blogging. I finished the first draft back in October, as you know, and since then I've been focused on making it better, not to mention longer. I've changed some plot points, added scenes here and there, and of course I've been editing a lot of bad writing.

However, I have been posting to Instagram, and also I got a new tumblr! The navigation section needs some work, and the design is pretty bland, but all the My Blog and Reblog tags should be up to date. Yep, I've separated them for your convenience!

So, that's that. Wish my luck with my editing!!!

Missing Blip.tv Episodes

There were several web series on Blip.tv that I enjoyed. But for some reason, I guess I fell out of touch with those web series for awhile.

Which is why I didn't notice when Blip.tv vanished from the internet.

For awhile I was searching for certain episodes that I enjoyed and not finding them. For some reason it took me awhile to investigate WHY I wasn't finding them, maybe because most episodes that I liked could also be found on YouTube. So I didn't notice Blip was gone until, like, almost a year after it shut down. When I finally realized this, I also realized that those episodes I couldn't find were likely lost forever.

For some reason this really bummed me out. Talk about a first world problem, right? I certainly live a good life if I can worry about this. XD But, I don't know, it just disappoints me that these things I used to love I will likely never watch again. Honestly it's mostly that I'm annoyed with myself for not even noticing that they were gone. You'd think that means that I didn't actually like them that much, but honestly I did. In my defense, the year Blip went under I graduated from college. I was distracted. XD But I'm kicking myself for not knowing that Blip was going under and doing something while I had the chance. Petitioning the creators to post their series on Vimeo or something. A couple of the lost episodes I'm thinking of were on YouTube but were later removed for some ridiculous copyright claim. The web series I'm talking about are all those comedic movie reviews.

One series that I used to love--and still love--was the "What We Had To Watch" webseries by Il Neige, aka Garret Snook. My favorite episode of that show used to be his "Lucario and the Mystery of Mew" review, and I also like his "Monster House" review. Both those episodes are now gone, though I can still watch most of the series on YouTube. It just makes me miss those episodes when Il Neige references them during other reviews, and, like I said, the "Lucario" review was my favorite. XD Like most people I love his Pokemon themed stuff.

Kind of off topic, but it does have to do with creativity, namely movies and web shows, so I thought I'd post it. Also I don't think I'm the only one who was thrown for a loop when Blip vanished. Hell, Channel Awesome had to figure out a whole new way to host its videos. I really hope that the company that bought Blip.tv restores those lost episodes sometime...

Significant Characters

There are two animated characters that are not only my favorite characters, but are also important to me on a personal level: Mewtwo, from Pokemon; and Elsa, from Frozen. In these two videos I draw them both and discuss why they are so important to me. Yay life discussions!

EDIT:

Forgot to post the images on Instagram, let alone share them here. Whoops!

A New Coping Mechanism

If you watched/read my intro video/blog, you know that I'm neurodivergent with some mental health issues. I've struggled with anxiety my whole life. I've also had problems with chronic nausea my whole life. And I always get anxious about feeling nauseous, which increases the nausea, which increases the anxiety... it's a glorious vicious cycle. XP I've tried numerous coping mechanisms to deal with both issues, but recently I've stumbled upon something that works better than anything I've tried in the past: drawing from reference.

In the past my main strategy was writing, however I needed to think up what to write next, which isn't easy when your brain is seized with terror. When doing studies from photos, I don't need to think of what to draw next--I just draw what I see! Also, it feels productive, so I don't feel quite like I'm dropping everything to deal with my issues. Technically, I still am, but at least I'm still accomplishing a goal.

...I just hope this won't suddenly stop working for me, the way writing did. XD In the meantime, my studies are filling my folders and my Instagram account! And I like to think I'm honing my drawing skills as well. :)

New Camera Setup!

I just bought an Ott Light, which enables me to set up my camera (aka my phone XD) in a way that lets me film myself drawing!

A photo posted by Mary DeMauro (@marydemauro) on

I got the idea to use an Ott Light to film from YouTuber Baylee Jae. My setup is pretty similar to the one she had when she used an Ott Light, with some modifications.

As you can see from this test video, the setup works great! I just need to find a way to secure my phone/camera better so it doesn't shake so much. XD

And for those interested, here is Baylee Jae's video that inspired me to use a similar camera setup:

So, now that this is all worked out, I'll be making some drawing videos! :D Hope you'll enjoy them!

Hello World!

Greetings to all! My name is Mary DeMauro and I am here to talk about all things to do with creativity. I carry around a folder filled with paper for drawing and writing, and I'm often seen with a book as well. I also love watching movies--preferably animated and horror films. But first and foremost I am a storyteller. Creating stories and characters is my passion. I am here to share my love of creativity with you!

So, other points of interest... I currently work as a social media manager. My hobbies, as I mentioned before, include drawing, writing, and reading. I belong to two cats, Sig and Carlson, and you'll probably see them popping up here and there. I have Asperger's Syndrome, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The former I consider an asset; the latter I have worked hard to cope with.

As I said before, storytelling is an important part of my life. That's why this blog is called The Spiderweb--spiders are universal symbols of creativity, hence why they are some of my favorite animals.

So, that's it for now! Hope you enjoy my ramblings!
